Introduction to hydrogen and fuel cell Department
Department of hydrogen and fuel cell was established from the beginning of formation of Renewable energy organization of IRAN (SUNA) and according to organizational framework objectives and its activities in three main professional groups has continued until today. The general actions and orientations of the department is looking for development of hydrogen energy systems in energy cycle as an energy carrier in this era, and executive goals to economic, social and cultural development plans and objectives of Islamic Republic of Iran contained in the 20 years Vision.
Activities of hydrogen and fuel cell department in three specialized groups, mainly including understanding and development of hydrogen energy infrastructure technologies (production, storage, supply and consumption of hydrogen), involved in policy development of hydrogen energy systems, supporting research activities of institutes, universities and research centers in different fields related to hydrogen energy technology development and future plans for this technology is in the country.
Also, in order to create more familiar researchers, engineers, policymakers and students, with advantages, capabilities and applications of hydrogen energy systems, and increase the public knowledge as well as implementation of various pilot plant of hydrogen energy systems, in Renewable Energy Park of Taleghan has been implemented several projects in the fields of production, supply and storage and consumption of hydrogen (fuel cell). Showing the performance of hydrogen fuel cell systems and research and making the public culture in this sector are among the goals of SUNA. Therefore, Taleghan site has been constructed in order to focus on renewable energy technologies and purpose to show the performance of hydrogen systems and its related technologies with other renewable sources including solar energy.
On the other hand, considering the special situation of fuel cell systems as a leading technology in the realization of the hydrogen era, some studies has been made by managing SUNA, as a representative of the Ministry of Energy and co-operation with the Ministry of Science, Research and Technology, Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Oil, Ministry of Industries and Mines and Presidential Technology Cooperation Office and other stakeholders, led to development of "National Strategy Document of Fuel Cell Technology Development " that outlines the activities and goals are consistent with Vision for the country and the document was approved by cabinet on July 2004.
The hydrogen and fuel cell department has tried to train technical experts in the field of hydrogen energy and fuel cell by means of employing the experts in mechanics, chemistry and power and has good relationship with universities, research centers and industries and improving related technological know-how through contributing at internal and external training courses.
The most important activities conducted by this department include: launching Lab-scale and pilot plants in field of hydrogen and fuel cell, studies on the above systems in several volumes, cooperation with national and international consultants, resulting in the measures that will be explained in detail in the activities of each group.
In addition, this department in order to gather all related activities and notification of hydrogen and fuel cell researchers and scholars in the country, has accomplished promotional efforts such as release the hydrogen fuel cell magazine, managing a specialized website, providing financial and technical facilities to universities and research centers through the support of theses to the related activities and objectives of the national document of fuel cell that lead to create a fund intended to support researchers and industrialists in the hydrogen energy sector and fuel cell.
We hope that considering the environmental threats and pollution due to abundant consumption of fossil energy resources and in order to diversify Energy Cart of country to achieve appropriate position in region, we will observe the increasing growth of hydrogen energy technology, education and professional and skilled manpower also localize technologies related to modern energy carriers in our country.
