Wind and Wave Office

The Iranian Wind and Wave Office Renewable Energies Organization has started its activities with the following objectives:
-          Execution of studies, researches and developments in the field of wind and waves energy
-          Training professional personnel and publication of books and papers
-          Designing, consulting, manufacturing and executing sample systems
-          Technical support and capacity making regarding the development of wind and wave energy aspects
-          cooperation with universities in researches and theses
-          cooperation with private and public wind power plant constructor companies
-          presenting data of the available wind Atlas centers to real and legal person introduced to the office
-          attending at seminars and presenting papers in national and international conferences
and….

This office has concentrated its activities in the following three groups:
1.        Small wind, marine and water resources and potentials identification group
The duty of this group was initially to identify the resources and capable small regions to use wind, marine and water energies, and then to perform calculations of wind potential and estimation of producible energy and feasibility study of constructing wind power plant. The permanent updating of the wind potential in wind Atlas of the country is of course one of the duties of the group and the plan of country’s marine potential evaluation is also in its primary steps and plan-making phase.
2.        The duty of small wind, marine and water technologies development group is to propose the study, evaluation and implementation of different plans in construction of marine power plants pilots (isolation of energy from tide, marine current, waves and heat difference). This group also evaluates feasibility of implementation and development of technology relating to the use of small water turbine and offshore wind power plant.
3.        elaborative study and planning group
The duty of this group is making elaborative plans to develop and apply small wind, marine and water energies.

Projects of the Office
-          Designing a 600 KW turbine, supervision on its manufacturing and its installation at Babayian region of Manjil.
-          Designing a 100 KW turbine, supervision on its manufacturing and its installation at Sahand region of Tabriz.
-          Preparation of national model of country’s wind atlas
-          Data acquisition and transformation through satellite methods
-          Micrositing of Azerbaijan zero phase
-          Micrositing and potency measurement of Azerbaijan Gharbi province
-          Micrositing and potency measurement of capable region in windy tunnel of Manjil.

Preparation of national model of country’s wind atlas is the main objective of this office and it is ongoing in different phases. Beside, policy making about role and position of small wind, marine and water energies in energy basket of country and their recognition and exploitation is on board which is under estimation and negotiation now with relating organizations. This office has specific profession at wind plants (plants positioning, feasibility of installation, designing power plant and energy calculations, supervision on installation, etc.) construction of anemometer stations, data transmission via satellite technology (for the first time in Iran) using state of art technology in data acquisition (e.g. SODAR meteorological instrument).

Updated softwares to design wind power plants and other computer softwares have been purchased by this office and they are available in archive.

This office has this liability to approve the meteorology instruments, related softwares and potency measurement of wind power plants. Capacity making and picking up the most superlative power plants in country energy basket are the policies of this office in the course of new energies. All the personnel in this office are professional and skilled, well trained and passed several courses inside or outside of the country in their work field including designing of wind power plants, anemometer stations constructing, data acquisition and data processing, data transfer through satellite and utilizing Sodar instrument, this office seems it an accomplishment being proud of which. Construction of about 100 anemometer stations and designing wind power plants are recorded in the work report of this office.

The precise identification of the existing restrictions, obstacles and facilities for using energy resources in the country necessitates the scientific and accurate calculation and evaluation of the amount of exploitation of the existing potentials of energy and the renewable energies conveyors development process within the country.

Iran is considered to be one of the richest countries all over the world concerning different energy resources. Why it holds great unrenewable fossil fuel resources like oil and gas on one hand and it has a great potential regarding the renewable energies like wind on the other hand.

Using the wind energy is growing increasingly compared with other energy resources used in most of the countries of the world, after the development of the environmental points of view and economical directions in the exploitation of unrenewable energy resources. Using wind turbines technology may be a suitable choice compared with other unrenewable energy resources for the following reasons:

§          The economical cost of wind electrical turbines in comparison with other kinds of new energies
§          Its high potential of work opportunity creation in the country
§          Prevention from air pollution

In some developed countries such as Germany, Denmark, USA, Spain, England, etc, different huge and small wind turbines have been made and so many plans are understudy in order to continue researches and apply wind energy to generate electricity with multi-megawatt units.

Regarding the existence of the great number of windy places in Iran, designing and manufacturing windmills was highly typical from 2000 years BC and now there exists a good atmosphere for the development and exploitation of wind turbines. Wind-electricity generators could be an appropriate substitution for gas and steam power plants. Studies and evaluations regarding the wind potential estimation in Iran illustrates that in 26 sections of the country (including more than 45 suitable sites) the nominal capacity of the sites, considering a general efficiency of 33% is approximately 6500 megawatt, however, it is noteworthy that the nominal capacity of all power plants of the country is already 3400. In wind turbines wind kinematical energy is transformed to mechanical and then electrical energy.

When mean wind speed is in the range of 5 to 25, technical usage of wind power would be possible. Producible potential of wind power in the world is estimated about 110 Ej (each Ej equals to 1018 J), 40 MW of which is the capacity installed by the end of 2003 (1382-solar calendar) all over the word.

The advantages of using this energy are the self-contained wind turbine which does not need any fuel, supplying a part of needed electrical energy, wind energy being proportionally less than fossil energies in long term, diversification of energy resources and constructing stabilized energy system, high manure possibility in exploitation (from watts to megawatts), needing no water and non-existence of environmental contamination.

This industry makes more job opportunities compared with other relevant energy industries. Installing 1 MW of wind electricity in Europe makes 15 to 19 jobs for people and this figure is greater in developing countries.

Based on the available information, each KWh electrical energy generated by wind could prevent from the emission of 1 Kg CO2 in the air, compare to fossil fuel power plant. In general, emission of 3% of green house gases are prevented through replacing 1% of wind electrical energy with electrical energy produced by fossil fuel power plant. In Manjil field, for example, each 500 KW turbine can produce at least 1500 MWh electrical energy per year and the mentioned amount greatly reduces the environmental pollutions as follows:

CO2=1275000 Kg SO2=4350Kg                          NOX=3900 Kg       soil=150 Kg             ash=82500 Kg

In developed countries such as Germany, Denmark, US, Spain, France and similar countries, small and large wind turbines are manufactured and some programs are also under study for the continuation of researches and using the wind energy in electricity production in units with multi-megawatt power.
