Biomass Gasification

Biomass Gasification

Biomass has been a major energy source, prior to the discovery of fossil fuels like coal and petroleum. Even though its role is presently diminished in developed countries, it is still widely used in rural communities of the developing countries for their energy needs in terms of cooking and limited industrial use. Biomass, besides using in solid form, can be converted into gaseous form through gasification route.Gasification of biomass converts a solid renewable fuel to a gas that can be used in a modern conversion device, such a gas turbine or engine for electricity and heat production.

Concept and Principle

Gasification is thermochemical conversion of solid carboneous feedstock (biomass, coal or wastes)into gaseous fuel which contans carbon monoxide, hydrogen, carbon dioxide ,methan, traces of higher hydrocarbons, water , nitrogen ( if air is used as gasifying agent ) and various amounts of tar and solid particles (ash.char).Gasification occurs at temperature over 500 C when devolatilized char chemically react with oxygen and/or hydrogen introduced by gasifying agent (air, oxygen, steam, hydrogen, carbon dioxide or mixture of some these gases). The producer gas obtaind by the process of gasification can have end use for thermal application or for mechanical / electrical power generation.

Power Generation

The thechnology convert woody biomass such as forest industry wastes into a gas which then power large turbines or gas engines to produce power. The exhaust heat is further used for thermal suppliers .This technology called the biomss integrated gasification combined cycle(BIGCC). System has numerous advantages including high efficiency (over 80%),low emission and flexibility producer electrical. And thermal energy.
1kg wood produce 1.5m3 of gas with average calorific value of 5.4MJ/m3 . Average calorific value of wood (dry)is 19.8 MJ/kg. The average energy conversion efficiency of wood gasifiers is about 60 – 70%.

A wood gasifier system basically comprises of a reactor where the gas is generated and followed by a cooling and cleaning train which cols and cleans the gas. The clean combustible gas is available for power generation in diesel-gen-set whereas for thermal use the gas the reactor can be directly fed to the combustor using an ejector.
Using wood gas, it possible to operate a diesel engine on dual fuel mode. Diesel substitution of the order of 80 to 85% can be obtained at nominal loads. The mechanical energy thus derived can be used either for energising a water pump set for irrigational purpose or for coupling with an alternator for electrical power generation, either for local consumption or for grid synchronisation.

Our programmes was decided in year……and progresses on the gasification R&D and feasibility studies for construction of a CHP plant using the new gasification technology was started and implemented.

The aim was demonstrating this gasification concept superior to any other gasifier for CHP purpose.

Priorities of our attendace to gasification technology are :

1)       Utilise biomass or waste products for power production
2)       Economical benefits of Co2-neutral power production
3)       High efficiencies suitable for small to medium CHP plants

The tasks in the projects are :

·          To design a (Woodchips) gasification plant based on experience from previous biomass gasification development projects, new modeling activities and studies of gasification reaction.
·          To implement the new design at the existing CHP plant
·          To complete a verification study of the operation of the combined heat and power biomass gasification plant.

We have today so much knowledge and operational experience within gasification plant. We enable to perform speciallised cosultancy within gasification .The organization (or company?) is in the process of developing the gasification technology than CHP application.
